Zadrobilek E, Missaghi SM, Krasser K, Puchner W, Marian F (for the Austrian Working Group for Airway Management). Recommendations of the Austrian Working Group for Airway Management: Preoperative Airway Evaluation and Documentation, Dissemination, and Communication of Difficult Airway Information

Documentation and Dissemination of the Experienced Difficult Airway

For reliable documentation of the experienced difficult airway (DA), anesthesia records should provide entries for grading of face-mask ventilation, conventional laryngoscopic view grading, and the techniques used for (un)successful airway management (AM).

The dissemination of DA information should start immediately after the incidence. The patients should first receive a color-coded alert wrist band that accompanies them throughout the entire hospital stay (13). Further in-hospital dissemination of DA information is best ensured by the attachment of an alert label on the cover of the medical record and placing the anesthesia record with detailed documentation of the experienced DA right in front the medical record.

Recommendations of the Austrian Working Group for Airway Management

We recommend the implementation of in-hospital medic alert systems for the experienced DA starting with a color-coded alert wrist band for the patient immediately after the incidence. We further emphazise the attachment of an alert label on the cover of the medical record and placing the anesthesia record with detailed description of the (un)successful AM techniques used right in front the medical record.
