Zadrobilek E. Andranik Ovassapian: Teacher of Flexible Bronchoscopy-Assisted Tracheal Intubation and Airway Evaluation with a Structured Training Program

Introduction of Flexible Bronchoscopy-Assisted Techniques into Anesthestic Practice

Ovassapian (9, 10) recommended, that staff anesthetists, unfamiliar with flexible bronchoscopy-assisted techniques, should first attend hands-on workshops (for training on airway models), and organize and assemble an airway cart that contains all the necessarily required equipment and supplies, along with a system for routine care. When the basic knowledge and handling of flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope are acquired, they should limit the first attempts in anesthetized patients with normal airway anatomy to laryngeal exposure only. With minimized time for laryngeal exposure, there will be enough time for completing tracheal intubation in a further step. For all interventions, a qualified assistant for jaw-thrust and other maneuvers, and monitoring of the patient should be available and present.
