This historical note celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the first published description of the double-lumen esophageal-tracheal combitube for easy and safe control of the airway and ventilation in emergency situations by Michael Frass. He redesigned (together with Jonas Zahler and Reinhard Frenzer) the single-lumen esophageal obturator airway. This article describes the early experiences with this innovative airway device primarily developed for rescue ventilation.
