Summary
This historical note celebrates the fortieth anniversary of the first published description of flexible endoscopy-assisted tracheal intubation by Peter Murphy; he used a flexible fiberoptic choledochoscope for nasotracheal intubation. The article also describes the early experiences with this innovative technique for tracheal intubation and airway evaluation by others, and the following technical improvements of flexible fiberoptic endoscopes dedicated for airway management.
