The Mayo oropharyngeal airway was a metal open-cage oropharyngeal airway with a single row of bent wires (curved and rounded at the distal end) and fastening wire bands at the proximal end. Modifications followed with an additional side feed tube for the fresh gas flow, the distal end distinctly narrowed (Lumbard modification), and/or with a removable metall-rubber bite block section.
